The Path of Least Resistance: Are We Choosing Comfort Over Challenge?

Let’s face it: we’ve all had those days when the couch is calling our name and the thought of lacing up your shoes for a walk feels like torture. Or how about those tempting fries calling your name while broccoli sits quietly in the fridge, looking all lonely?

And then there's the classic last-minute meal scramble, tossing together whatever is on hand or going through a drive-thru instead of planning ahead. When you choose happy hour with co-workers and cancel your personal training session, you are taking the path of least resistance.

Have we really become that soft? Are these things so hard that we’d rather make excuses than get up and move or plan nutritious meals?

Let’s get real for a moment: losing weight can be tough, but often, we’re the ones making it harder than it needs to be. We tell ourselves things like, “No one else has to do this work,” or “No one is as busy as I am.” We convince ourselves that our lives are uniquely challenging when, spoiler alert, everyone has their own struggles.

We might even whine about counting calories or giving up our beloved snacks—because who wants to say goodbye to late-night sweets? And let’s not even talk about injuries; they can feel like the ultimate excuse to quit.

But here’s the kicker: when we start talking ourselves out of doing the things that align with our goals, especially those we’ve committed to, we’re essentially blocking our own success. It’s like putting up a roadblock on your journey to becoming the best version of yourself.

At times, it may feel like we’ve already given up, and let’s face it—the more days we choose to skip out on what we said we’d do, the harder it becomes to pivot. How do you turn the bus around? It takes time and effort.

Now, I can’t force anyone to do the work. That’s something deep and personal—you have to figure that out for yourself. It’s a hard truth, but you’re not fooling anyone, least of all yourself. Deep down, you know when you’re listening to that voice that prefers comfort over challenge.

So, what’s the solution? Let’s keep it simple. Pick one thing to focus on. But here’s the catch: you can’t mess this up. Maybe it’s committing to a 30-minute walk every day for 30 days, or perhaps saying no to cookies, cake, and candy for a week. Whatever it is, you need a win.

Once you complete that challenge, you’ll build momentum. It’s all about training yourself to follow through and celebrate those small victories. Because guess what? Every little win adds up, and soon enough, you’ll find yourself feeling more energized and motivated to tackle the next goal.

Hopefully, you take time to reflect and ask yourself some hard questions: Am I making this harder than it needs to be? Do I really think I have more challenges than others who have lost weight? Am I choosing the path of least resistance and why?

There is so much freedom on the other side of roadblocks. I hope this helped you with your journey and gave you some insight on what it takes to get out of your own way.

Keep moving,
